Movies – Lifeboat (1944)

recently Otis Frampton did a USTREAM broadcast of the drawing of a series of sketchcards all with a Alfred Hitchcock theme to them. Watching him got me on a Alfred Hitchcock kick.

So naturally the only thing to do at that point would be to goto Netflix and check out what they had available from him on their Instant Viewing list… They had a lot! So of course I started with LIFEBOAT

Lifeboat

Lifeboat is set during World War Two. As the story opens a ship has just been torpedoed by the Nazi’s and the survivors are slowly making their way onto a lifeboat. Shortly after the lifeboat fills up everyone realizes that one of their number just happens to be the Captain from the Nazi ship (which just happened to be sunk by a lucky return shot before the ship went under.)

The movie from there revolves around if they should let this evil person live or send him to the depths. Slowly the Nazi captain goes from being the prisoner to being the captor.

I think that the Lifeboat is one of my favorite movies by Hitchcock, using one setting and just a handful of actors he is able to keep me entertained through the entire movie. We see how the littlest things can swing the direction of a crowd, and how the the options that we would think unthinkable can become acceptable when it comes down to life or death.

Friday Movies – The Watchmen

watchmenx-large

watchmen_teaserposterI have to be honest with you from the start. I never liked the Watchmen comic book. I really can’t think of any of Alan Moore’s work that I have liked. I know in the geek world that is pretty much considered herasy, but that is just the way it is.

Having said that, when I had a chance to actually get out of the house for something other then school and go see the movie I jumped at the chance. I have to tell you that I was really really surprised. I honestly liked this movie. In fact, I would have to say that it would take a place in my top five all time favorite comic book movies.

I think that one of the things that I appreciated the most from the movie makers was that they did not try to pack this movie with a Heavy Metal music in the hopes that it would help them move more cd’s and increase the profitable. The music that they chose seemed to fit the time that the movie was supposed to be set in as well as the scene in which it was being used.

The other thing that i really liked was the casting. I thought that the roles were well filled. Inparticular I loved the two that they had playing Rorshach and the Comedian. I thought that they fit perfectly and really brought the characters to life. watchmen-movie-13

Cleaning out the Links and other assorted nonsense…

Well, I never post a book review yesterday. That is mainly due to the fact that I didn’t finish reading a book in this past week. What can I say, that is going to happen from time to time. Specialy during the school year I just dont get the amount of time I would like to devote to reading. I am a little over half way through MONSTER PLANET though and have a realitivly free weekend so I should have one for next week with out a problem.

Now on to cleaning out all the links and what not that I have been saving up for the past lord knows how long…

First off is a Doctor Who Anime. I found this one a while ago, and to be honest I can not remember if I ever posted it before so forgive me if I have… seriously though it is so cool that you should be watching it at least twice anyway.

I really wish that there was a way to put the movie trailers from apple right into a web page but there is not so you have to follow the links to go see them… First out of the gate is a remake of The Taking of Pelham 123, I really loved this movie. When I really love an original I get real nervous when they remake it. Hopefully they will do as well with this one as they did with the Poseidon Adventure. Next up in my series of movie trailers is GI JOE, as a GI JOE movie I think that this trailer looks horrible. I think that the look of the team is all wrong. Having said that as a big bang exploding in your face action movie I think this looks pretty freaking cool. A movie that I had hoped for for a long time finally has a trailer. Land of the Lost. I tried to keep some hope for it being a good movie when I found out about the casting… but yeah, all hope is gone now. This just looks plain stupid. Alien Trespass on the other hand looks just campy enough to be a good time, and the same goes for Super Capers, it looks like it might be what be No Heroics done on a movie budget.

Art Adams is one of my favorite artist. The detail he puts into his work and the tightness of his lines are just amazing. So one of my favorite bits of news to come out of the Comic Conventions as of late is that he has signed and exclusive deal with Marvel to to actual interior pages on a book! His short story on THE HULK book has made me miss his interiors, so this is great news.

And that is enough cleaning for one morning. Time to go make the kid breakfast…

Fridays Movies… On Sunday.

Ok… time to fix the mix up… here is what should have shown up on Friday.

The Mummy 3
– The Mummy was overshadowed this summer by the return of another franchise, Indiana Jones, but to tell the truth they might as well have been the same movie. At least this one didnt have Shia in it though so that was a plus.

This movie was another example of the studio bringing in a new young actor to play the hip young kid of our hero in hopes of rebooting the series and continuing on after the original is ready to hang up the hat.

I have always been a fan of the campiness that is Frasers Mummy movies and I did like this one. No where near as much as the first two but I still thought that it was a good adventure tale.

This one will be joining my DVD collection.

Hellboy 2 – Another sequel. This one I didnt think to high of. I thought that the cast seemed like they were just going thru the motions with a plot and story that just really didnt grab your attention. With how much they had to work just to get a studio to make this movie I was really hoping for something that really thrilled me the way the first one did.

This one might join my DVD collection once it hits the $7 rack or I find it for a really good used price. Otherwise I might just watch it again when they start showing it all the time on cable…

The thing that scares me is that these people really seem to think this is real.

The newest AD video for the Watchmen has shown up on the internet…
